Top Tips to Speed Up a Slowing Computer

Monday, January 18th, 2010

The best, and fastest computers, all slow over time. It’s a fact of life and is probably happening to your computer right now. Here are some of my Top Tips on how to keep your computer running smooth.

  1. Registry Cleaners – Your registry is like the card catalogue for your hard drive. Unfortunately, Windows does a poor job cleaning up after itself. Imagine going to the library, looking up a book you need, only to find out the book was moved to a different shelf and the catelogue never updated! You can imagine how much longer it takes to find information. As you use your computer, the registry gets cluttered, and a quality Registry Cleaner can have a dramatic effect not only on the speed, but the stability of your machine!
  2. Turn down the effects – Windows allows for a lot of effects – partially transparent windows or title bars, fade-in and -out effects, etc. All of which take their toll on the processor. Simplify your Windows effects and you can see amazing changes to your computer’s speed! My recommendation – a free program called Advanced System Care, which simplifies this and so much more! Just do a search for it in Google or Bing.
  3. Disk Defrag – As that data on your hard drive gets erased and written over, your computer can ’scatter’ it around and never stop to take a look at the ‘big picture’. Huh? What that means is, sometimes you have to make your computer take a ’step back’, look at the hard drive, and reorganize the data on it so it just makes more sense. Windows has a built in Defrag utility you should use regularily!
  4. Get rid of the trash – Both in your recycle bin and on the computer. Again, Advanced System Care is great at this, to go in and find the ‘junk’ and abandoned files, extensions, etc. that clutter up your system and it’s memory.

On a personal note, while Advanced System Care is an amazing program, I’ve found that it’s built-in Registry Cleaner is barely adequate. Running it can take quite some time, and following it up with my top option typically find the job only half done. IMHO, invest in a full-featured Registry Cleaner; it’s worth the money.

It only takes a few minutes every month or so to keep your computer decluttered and running as smoothly as possible. Invest the time, and you could be surprised at how fast your computer can be.

Blue Screen of Death and how to fix it

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

The chances are – it’s happened to you or it will.

The infamous “Blue Screen of Death”. Something goes wrong in your computer, and you get a blue screen, officially the “Windows Stop Message”.

But what causes it, and what’s the fix? More importantly, how do you prevent it!

Causes:

Basically, it errors occurs when Windows finds a software, hardware or driver error which will not allow it to continue operating properly. To put it another way, it can happen anytime, for almost any reason!

Some of the typical error messages you’ll see are:

  • DIVIDE_BY_ZERO_ERROR
  • IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
  • REGISTRY_ERROR
  • INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
  • UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
  • NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
  • NMI_HARDWARE_FAILURE

There are a number of ways to fix the Blue Screen of Death, once you get one. They tend to be technical, complex, and time-consuming (not to mention flat-out confusing!).

The best offense is a good defense. Keeping your system optimized and running smoothly.

One of the root causes of many of the problems that would cause a Blue Screen of death is your Registry. In short, the registry is a huge database your computer uses to track all the software, etc. that’s added to your machine. Install a program? Information is added to the registry with serial codes, install locations, etc. Uninstall a program? That information is removed. In theory!

In practice, while Windows keeps getting better, your computer does a terrible job cleaning up after itself. Information gets left behind, misplaced, and forgotten. It gets spread around and slows the computer as it has to search for the information it needs.

And, sometimes, the computer gets confused.

The result? Far too often it’s the Blue Screen.

The best way to help prevent this is to get a good Registry Cleaner and run it frequently. These advanced programs scan your system, find that misplaced and abandoned information, and fixes or removes it and helps your system run smoothly. They’re invaluable.

Keep your system running smoothly, and avoid the Blue Screen of Death.

6 Tips on choosing the best Registry Cleaner.

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

There are dozens of Registry Cleaners out there, and it’s mostly impossible for an individual to try each one.

Registry Cleaners address any of several problem areas: slowing computer, broken links, blue screen of death, .dll errors, and general file issues.

There are a few things you can look for in a Registry Cleaner, to help insure you’re getting the best one for you.

  1. Backup the registry – sure, you can manually backup your registry, but it’s a pain! Having the ability to back it up automatically is critical. The registry is important enough that, even the best Registry Cleaner could inadvertantly mess up, so you don’t want to fix any errors until the Registry is backed up first!
  2. Does it do more than just fix the errors – maybe not ‘anyone’ could put together a Registry Cleaner, but the programs that do more, like optimizing Internet Explorer, optimizing the Windows experience, etc. etc. show a company providing greater value and attention to detail
  3. Interface – a great program that doesn’t explain what it’s doing so the average user can understand isn’t just a bad idea – it’s dangerous! A clean interface that makes sense and explains what’s happening as it works is important.
  4. Does it work – there are cleaners, and there are good cleaners! You want one that does the best possible job.
  5. Value – finally, none of us has an unlimited budget, and getting the above features in the most value-packed package is our main goal!
  6. Free initial scan – if you have a problem, the ability to try a Free Scan and see the issues in your computer that need to be addressed, can save you money. If a Free Scan finds no errors, then maybe a Registry Cleaner isn’t for you!

The above are a good guideline for you in hoping to choose a Registry Cleaner.

Does your Registry need to be Scoured clean?

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

Remember when your computer was new and fresh – how quickly it opened new applications?
That “new computer” smell?
Computers age – and the fact is they do a poor job of cleaning up after themselves! As programs are added and removed, little bits of information remain floating around disorganized.
As fast as a modern computer is, it still takes TIME for your computer to sort through it all.
Imagine if you had a dictionary, and you need to look up a word – you flip to the appropriate page, scan down, and there’s your answer.
Now, what if you had the dictionary torn apart and scattered around your house? You want to look up the word “symbiosis”, but only the ‘M’s” are at your desk, and you THINK the “S’s” are upstairs in your underwear drawer.
Even if you walk right to it – it still takes that extra bit of time.
That’s a pretty good analogy for what might be going on in your computer RIGHT NOW if you’ve noticed it working just a bit slower than before.
The answer? Registry Cleaners! These sort through that massive database of information your computer keeps about it’s configuration (The Registry) and, using advanced algorithms, and determine which are out of date and/or un-needed. YOU, the user, are then given the option of cleaning and repairing them!

I’ve successfully used Registry Cleaners to clean up and speed up my computers over the years, and I’ve taken my two favorites and created a Top Registry Cleaners Review to compare them and recommend them.

If you’ve been having a problem with your computer’s performance, or getting any “missing dll” errors and the like, a program like these can dramatically help you.

Best of all, these Full-Featured type programs can do SO much more, including optimizing your system, fixing broken links, cleaning up shortcuts, and helping you more easily control the items that startup with Windows.

You owe it to yourself to check out the review and decide for yourself!
